My child asked me "What does our family believe in?" - Cultural inheritance lessons for overseas Chinese families

1. That moment that all overseas parents will encounter

When your child is seven or eight years old, he comes back from school and suddenly asks you:

Or another version:

You were stunned. Because you don’t know how to answer either.

You have a lot of things, but you can’t quite put your finger on what it is.

This article is to help you clarify the "unexplainable things" for you.

Our family believes in ancestors and filial piety.

It's that simple.

No theological explanations, no complex concepts required. Just say this to your child:

With this label, when he was asked "What do you believe" in school, he had the answer:“We do ancestor veneration — it’s our family tradition.”

This is the most important principle and the most certain thing in our twenty-five years of experience:

During Qingming Festival, you put offerings on the balcony, and your children saw it.
You light incense during the Ghost Festival, and the child comes over.
During the New Year, you bow to the east, and your children imitate it.

This is why we always emphasize: "If you do it, you will teach it."

Four or three things you can do with your children

There is no need for a big scene, just three small things are enough:

① Place offerings together

On Qingming Festival or death anniversary, let your children help you place fruits and pour water. Tell him, "This is for grandma and grandpa." No need to explain more. After doing it once, he knew it.

② Bow three times together

Children do whatever adults do. You bow, he bows. This is the most natural inheritance. Fifty years from now he will be doing the same thing in his own house and he will be thinking of you.

③ Tell a story about an ancestor

Many overseas Chinese will unconsciously compare themselves with Western religions and feel that they are "not formal enough". Look at it from another angle:

This is another complete spiritual system.

It's important to tell your children this. Not to let them reject other people’s beliefs, but to let them know that our family’s traditions are no less important than anyone else’s.

No one starts being a parent until he is ready, and no one starts passing on culture until he is ready.

You don’t need to understand the theory or follow the rules. You only need to do one thing today or next weekend:

Put out a glass of water, light a stick of incense, call the children, and bow three times.

Five minutes.

You have passed on Chinese culture to the next generation.
