Stillness begins by reducing automatic reaction, not eliminating every sound.

Begin with a real-life problem

Waiting for the world to become quiet before you rest may mean never resting. Messages, responsibilities, traffic, and other people rarely disappear at the same time. What you may need is not a perfectly silent room, but a short period in which nothing requires an immediate response.

Stillness is not paralysis and it is not the suppression of feeling. It resembles sediment settling in water: clarity does not arrive by force; it becomes possible when the water is no longer stirred.

Set aside ten minutes each day. Leave the phone in another room. Do not demand insight or achievement. Notice the body, the breath, and the thoughts that keep appearing. If ten minutes feels impossible, begin with three.

Stillness is not an escape from life. It is a pause in which life does not have to pass through every one of your defenses.
